Hack the Products, Marketing and Influence Beyoncé Used to Make $500 Million in a Single Year

Jan 18, 2018

Did you know Beyoncé has a sales funnel? Yes, I'm talking Queen Bey! Now, you're probably wondering what's the inside scoop on the products, marketing, and influence she used to earn over $500 million in a single year – don't worry, I'm going to spill the tea on Beyoncé's sales funnel in 5-4-3-2 …

But first, a little Bey background:

Beyoncé is known as one of the best entertainers of our time, and she didn't gain that notoriety by executing a whack marketing strategy.

She has crazy talent, but she also has a funnel in place. Do you remember back in 2016 when she released "Lemonade" and delivered that awesome Super Bowl performance AND revealed her infamous video for "Formation"? Well, that was a sales funnel.

I originally broke all of this down in 2017 in my now-closed Facebook group. One night, I was randomly on Facebook Live discussing funnels... and the Beyoncé Sales Funnel Hack downloaded into me and poured out.

Please allow me to explain …

The Beyoncé Sales Funnel … Hacked!

So the basis of Beyoncé's entire funnel was "content." Now, while entrepreneurs think of content as articles, blog posts, emails, and so on, "content" also includes music, videos, TV specials, and so on.

Knowing that, let's take a closer look at how Bey released content. Right before her Super Bowl performance, she surprised the world with her release of "Formation." From there, she premiered a cinematic debut of her "Lemonade" album exclusively on HBO before releasing the audio version on Tidal, a music streaming service owned by Bey and her husband, Sean "Jay Z" Carter. After securing several bags, she eventually made the "Lemonade" album available for purchase on iTunes.

Wow, that was a lot, huh? Okay, let me break it down:

Beyoncé's sales funnel included several lead magnets, all designed to pull in her ideal clients and customers. Her "Formation" single was one. Then came the Super Bowl performance and HBO special. Each of these lead magnets catered to different audiences.

For example, the surprise single release let die-hard Beyoncé fans know new music was coming. The Super Bowl performance gave her the opportunity to breathe life into her single and direct her own narrative around the song's meaning. And the cinematic debut of the entire album on HBO gave audiences a chance to see the story of "Lemonade" and connect and bond with her message.

Not to mention the Super Bowl commercial that hinted at her upcoming tour. One thing Beyoncé is going to do is release her concert tour schedule during income tax season. I ain't mad at her though; she knows her people. lol.

As you can see, each "lead magnet" pulled people into a "sales sequence" that built up to the ultimate goal – album and tour sales. In December 2016, it was reported that "Lemonade" sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States, making it the country's third-bestselling album of 2016.

It was also the best-selling album worldwide, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), with 2.5 million copies shipped globally. Beyoncé grossed $256 million from the 2016 Formation World Tour.

But wait … there's more.

Remember all the empowering tees and apparel Queen Bey had available for sale? Well, those quotes came straight from popular songs on the "Lemonade" album. And in the entrepreneurial world, we call that "passive income."

Between album sales, tours, apparel, and endorsements, Beyoncé produced over $500 million in revenue in a single freakin' year!

Ok, so Beyoncé killed it with the content. But please know she also has a magnetic brand and delivers an unmatched fan experience. Sooo, if you're thinking you can just throw content around, here's a lesson you must remember:

"Content" cannot and will not save the day if your branding and customer experience suck.

What Now?

I'm sure you might be thinking, "Thanks Kim for the Beyoncé breakdown, but I'm NOT a billionaire artist with millions of fans … how can this work for me?"

Here's the answer:

Developing a revenue-generating sales funnel doesn't require billions of dollars, millions of fans, or celebrity status … it requires STRATEGY. So whether you've made your first six figures or are still trying to pull in your first $6, sales funnels will work for you.

That is... when you know how to work them in a way that pulls in the perfect clients and takes them through an experience so incredible that they can't wait to throw money at you.

Now, the question is this:

Do YOU have an automated way to pull in your ideal clients and send them on a buyer's journey worth investing in?

No?! Don't worry, I got you.

A simple, automated sales funnel should include the following:

  • Landing Page
  • Thank You Page
  • Lead Magnet
  • Email Sequence
  • Offer

You may also consider having a booking page and a scheduling tool to make it easier for clients to book you.

Not sure how to put all the pieces together?
